Serves as an Aviation Safety Assistant in a Flight Standards field office. Provides administrative and semi-technical related support to the Aviation Safety Inspectors by obtaining background data, preparing reports, reviewing applications, interviewing applicants, processing certificates, and maintaining technical and administrative files. The incumbent works under the supervision of the team supervisor.

Processes FAA-issued airman certificates such as ground instructor, flight instructor, mechanic repairman, and flight engineer. Interviews applicants to determine qualifications for non-complex certificates. Processes FAA authorizations such as inspection authorization, aircrew program designee, and aerobatic competency. Process FAA-issued operator and air agency certificates such as air carrier, repair stations, and approved schools. Responsible for processing temporary airman certification files for certificates issued by designated examiners. Supports the Designated Written Test Examiner (DWTE) program by providing orientation and training of new examiners, providing required annual and periodic training as necessary.
Researches, writes, and types non-technical and routine technical correspondence. Assists in composing complex technical correspondence. Maintains, reviews, and revises form letters. Responsible for maintaining correspondence control system and suspense files. Prepares reports (such as accident, incident, violation, recurring and special reports) by researching, requesting information, creating files, preparing control sheets, copying and distributing preliminary and final report documents, and reviewing for accuracy and completeness.
Responsible for assigned technical and administrative files such as certificated operator and designee case files in accordance with agency directives.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level or FG/GS-5 level work in the Federal service.
