The area of consideration for this position is NATIONWIDE (Air). This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT), Position Description Number D1371000 and is part of the NC ANG, National Guard (145 MXS/Positions 1071639, 1071624, 1071658, 1071645).

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT), WG-3806-10, you will inspect aircraft and determine the nature and extent of repairs to be made, using applicable technical orders as guidelines; work directly on the aircraft and its components, fulfilling such tasks as removal, repair, modification and installation of parts and assemblies, such as frames, stringers, longerons, bulkheads, beams, ribs, spars, skin, cowling, brackets, faring, access doors, panels and other related items; repair cracks in aircraft skin; fabricate and fit patches to damaged areas, determining repair detail necessary to retain or restore original strength; fit and trim components to aircraft such as landing gear doors, control surfaces, flaps access doors and other assemblies; seal structures to make them pressure, water and weather tight; troubleshoot aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tails, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers; remove, form, fit, and install highly stressed and double contoured skins, using hand or powered drilling and cutting tools and other metal working equipment; install heads up, regular, heat treated, high shear, and blind type aircraft rivets and fasteners; remove damaged or broken fasteners and receptacles; align and balance component structures and airframe; perform metal-to-metal bonding; inspect damage or deterioration and determine repair or replacement of plastic, fiberglass, composites, bonded structures, and bonded honeycomb assemblies; repair or replace retaining frames and installs plastic laminated blanks; design and construct forming fixtures; manufacture and ensure that metal tubing, conduits and cables are fabricated and tested in accordance with drawings and specifications; fabricate and repair flexible control cables; perform fabrication of local manufactured items requited for aircraft and equipment; devise and calculate patterns employing the principles of triangulation, radial and parallel line development; set up and operate power shears, brakes, rolls, dimpling machines, drill presses, saws, portable powered tools, specific detection and measuring equipment, and other metal working equipment, requisition necessary supplies and equipment for the activity; prepare and design layout, dies, jigs, and templates necessary to carry out fabrication repair or modification of aircraft, engine, AGE, and other equipment; work from blueprints, technical orders diagrams, and work orders; identify metal corrosion; perform necessary testing to identify type corrosion present by examination with magnifying equipment, chemical and mechanical methods and treats aircraft engines; remove corrosion by mechanical and chemical procedures to include use of portable powered (electric and pneumatic) sanders, buffers, brushes, bead blasters, vacuum cleaners, scrapers, grinders, acids, caustics, solvents, alcohols and other agents; treat metal with chemical procedures, to protect metal from oxidation; perform such functions as pickling of metals to prepare for good bonding with primer coat of protective materials; apply protective coatings, markings, and decals after proper removal of corrosion and treatment of metals; use conventional paint spray equipment, electrostatic spray equipment, brushes and special applicators when applying primers and surface coatings; identify, blend, stores, controls, and dispose of hazardous materials used for corrosion removal, treatment and protection; prepare for and participate in various types of readiness evaluations; .

National Guard Membership is required.

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams.?
Specialized Experience: Experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.
