Aviation maintenance jobs are available in the private, military and commercial sectors. An aviation maintenance mechanic performs inspections, makes repairs, replaces defective components and corrects malfunctions.
An aviation maintenance technician performs maintenance on aircrafts in accordance with company, manufacturer and FAA regulations and approved procedures. A maintenance technician may work in the hanger or aircraft to maintain and repair aircraft structures and components like flight controls, engines, hydraulics, fuel systems, navigation equipment etc. Other duties of aviation maintenance jobs include maintaining up-to-date documentation of all repairs and maintenance, assisting with complex repairs at on-site and off-site locations, applying technical expertise to solve problems by interpreting technical documents like blueprints and manuals, and conducting routine and unscheduled maintenance when required.
The minimum educational qualification required for a maintenance job is a high school diploma or a GED, though a college degree is preferred. A candidate should possess a FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license. Prior aircraft maintenance/repair experience is mandatory. Ability to read and interpret technical data is also important. Other prerequisites of the job are effective oral and written communication and trouble- shooting skills.
