Avionics combines aviation and electronics and deals with the application of electronics for the purpose of operating aircraft and missiles. An avionics engineer is responsible for the technical management of avionics that includes design, manufacturing and verification. An aviation engineer is the pivotal part of modern aircraft system.

Avionics engineers perform a list of tasks that are inextricably related to aviation industry. The job responsibilities of an aviation engineer can be discussed under in the following way:
  • Involvement in system integration design for avionic equipment.
  • Monitoring the development and timely delivery of avionics.
  • Participating in meetings with suppliers.
  • Reviewing and following up whether the equipments are compliant with the prior specifications.
  • Performing stress analysis of aircraft structures.
  • Designing and analyzing performance of military aircraft modification programs.
  • Active participation in engineering development, revamping and re engineering of products and equipments.
  • Involvement in production of wiring schematics to integrate communication and navigation systems.
  • Producing wiring harness or assembly drawings.
  • Cross-functioning and liaising closely with the other members of the same section, with the other relevant project entities and other teams belonging to different engineering disciplines.
  • Checking wiring schematics, harness drawings, and wiring assembly drawings prepared by other designers.
  • Preparing ground test plans and flight test plans for bonding.
  • Participation in proposing avionic configurations for new aircraft.
  • Preparing estimates for avionic design work.
Avionics engineers must be accurate, patient and efficient professionals. They should be practical and rational in their work and keen observant too. They also must possess the skills of working in a team and take full responsibility for their own work. The skills of an avionics engineer are given below:
  • Technical skills.
  • Skill to read wire diagrams.
  • Strong communication skill.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Analytical thinking capability and far-sightedness.
  • Updating knowledge regarding aircraft equipments.
  • Identifying and solving all kinds of electronic problems in aircraft.
  • Knowledge of repairing techniques.
  • Sound hand-eye co ordination.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
In order to be an avionics engineer, a candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, mechanical, aeronautical, or aerospace. A university degree in Physics can also be a valid qualification. In addition, the candidate must possess have a sound knowledge of aviation programming design module. The candidate must also be knowledgeable in system integration, system maintainability, requirements, and procedures of systems. Having an aircraft structural analysis background always gives an edge. In addition to the bachelor's degree, a master's degree is a very big advantage for the candidate seeking to pursuer avionics engineering.

Their average salary is about $90,000 and can go up with experience.

The aviation industry in modern times has undergone a huge change; it is seeing a great increase in the application of digital communications and navigation systems. With aviation getting complex, avionics too is following the line. Thus the scope of avionics engineers is broadening with every single day.
